Ayala Curry (Mackerel Curry without coconut)

It’s an authentic dish of Kerala made in a clay pot. Here I don’t have that pot, so I have used a normal pan. Mackerel is a very healthy and tasty fish with a lot of health benefits.

Today let’s see how to make Kerala's special Ayala Curry…




Kerala Ayala Curry






Ingredients



Ayala (Mackerel)-1 or 2

Fenugreek Seeds-1/4 tsp

Mustard Seeds-1/4tsp

Dry Red chilly-1

Onion or shallots-1 medium

Ginger-finely sliced 1tsp

Green chilly-1

Tomato- 1 medium

Tamarind-lemon size ball

Chilly Powder-2 tsp

Coriander Powder-1 tsp

Fenugreek Powder-a pinch

Turmeric Powder-1/2tsp

Curry Leaves

Salt as required

Oil-2tsp

Water-1 cup

 


Preparation


·         Wash , clean and cut the fish in to medium pcs with or without head..

·         Soak tamarind in 1 cup of warm water for 10 minutes.

·         Heat oil in a pan and add fenugreek seeds, mustard seeds, red chillies and curry leaves. When it splutters add sliced ginger pcs and green chilly..

·         Then add sliced onions..

·         Saute it till it get transparent and then add tomato pcs, Saute it again for some time. Then add Turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder. Saute it in medium flame till the raw smell goes.

·         Mix well and add tamarind along with the soaked water. Don’t add too much water.

·         Add salt.

·         Boil it for some time on medium flame and add fish pcs..

·         Now close the lid and boil it for 10 minutes.

·         For light thick gravy, open the lid and boil it for another 5 minutes.

·         Switch off the flame.

·         At the end for the seasoning heat oil in a pan and add curry leaves and finely chopped shallots.

·         Saute it till it become brown and add this to the fish curry.

·         Once it cool down add a pinch of fenugreek powder.

Now our hot Kerala Ayala Curry is ready to serve..

Note:


·         You can change the amount of tamarind & Masala Powders according to your preferences.

·         To make fenugreek powder, roast fenugreek seeds for few seconds, then grind it to fine powder. You can keep it in an air tight container.
